Hairdressing is a vocation, a trade (craft) not unlike carpentry, brick masonry, or say, an electrician.
You see, haircuts are built through weight distribution, using any number of angles involving vertical and horizontal layers - and techniques such as slicing, chipping or notching, razor cutting, etc.... It's not about simply cutting the hair the same length all around and brushing it or making sure it's "even" on both sides! Style in hair is about balance and personalization - not a one cut fits all deal.
I was fortunate enough over 20 years ago to apprentice under a journeyman stylist and learn how to:
- gague hair texture, create weight and diminish it through a haircut
- learn myriad techniques for all hair types
- perhaps most importantly, reinvent, stay charged and creative, learn my clients' tastes, lifestyles, and to be able to offer not one or two looks, but dozens
I have rarely seen women so sequestered in a box that they were not open to suggestions.
Be well....
